In our house, Halloween is more than just a fun time of year. It’s a way of life. From carving pumpkins to dressing up in spooky costumes and watching scary movies, the month of October is virtually overrun with things that go bump in the night. That’s why we love the idea of merging two of our favorite autumnal traditions — ghoulish costumes and fluffy squishy marshmallows — into one super-spooktacular treat: Halloween Squishmallows! These adorable little guys are quick and easy to make, but they also double as awesome party favors that your guests will be talking about for weeks to come. Let’s get started!
What you’ll need
Hands down, the most important ingredient for this project is a squishy ball of homemade marshmallow fluff. If you’re short on time, you can buy it from the store, but if you want to get creative you can make the whole thing from scratch. These ingredients will help you create fluffy, spooky, squishy Halloween Squishmallows that are almost too cute to eat! If you want to take your Halloween Squishmallows to the next level, you can also add a few drops of food coloring to tint your marshmallow batter in Halloween-appropriate colors. To get your Squishmallows started, you’ll also need a few different types of icing, paper bags, and scissors.
How to make Halloween Squishmallows
If you’re using homemade marshmallows, start by pouring your fluff into a mixing bowl and beating it with an electric hand mixer on high speed until it’s nice and smooth. Next, add in your icing sugar, vanilla extract, and a few drops of orange food coloring, if you’d like. Mix everything together until it’s thoroughly combined, then place your marshmallow batter into a piping bag. If you’re using store-bought marshmallows, just follow the instructions on the bag to add the icing sugar and vanilla extract. Now that your batter is ready to go, it’s time to get squishy! Place a paper bag on a flat surface, and then cut a small corner off of your piping bag. Squeeze your marshmallow batter into the bag and then, holding the bag at an upward angle, squeeze the batter into the paper bag. You’ll want your bag to be completely filled and have no space left at the top, which will make it easier to seal.
Surprise! Easter Egg Squishmallows
If you’re looking to add something a little extra to your Halloween party table (or if you’re just looking for a squishy treat that goes beyond the usual Halloween colors) these rainbow Easter Egg Squishmallows are the perfect addition! They’re almost as easy to make as Halloween Squishmallows but with a few simple ingredient swaps. For starters, you can use any colors of icing you like, and then swap out the orange food coloring for purple coloring. You can also experiment with different types of sprinkles to really make these Easter Egg Squishmallows pop!
Ghoulish Gooey Marshmallows
If you’re looking to make your Halloween Squishmallows extra ghoulish, you can add in a little bit of brown food coloring to your batter. You can also dip the finished Squishmallows in melted chocolate to make them even more chocolate-y — just make sure to let them dry before packaging them for your party guests. If you want to take your Ghoulish Gooey Marshmallows to the next level, you can also add in a few different types of sprinkles. Try adding in some pink sprinkles to make them rosy and pouty, or some blue sprinkles to make them deep and dark. You can also go for glittery gold sprinkles for an extra-spooky look.
Bright and Beautiful Rainbow Squishmallows
Are you more of an optimistic, bright, and beautiful type of person? If so, these Rainbow Squishmallows are the perfect treat for you. To make them, all you have to do is add different colored icing to your homemade marshmallow batter. You can also swap out the orange food coloring for pink coloring, or mix together a few different colors to make a Squishmallow that’s as bright as a summer day. You can also sprinkle these Squishmallows with little multicolored sprinkles to really add to the brightness of the whole thing.
Summing up
In short, Halloween Squishmallows is the perfect marriage between two of the most iconic autumnal traditions: Halloween costumes and marshmallowy treats. With a little bit of creativity and hard work, you can make these Squishmallows in a variety of shapes and colors — and even add a few finishing touches like melted chocolate and sprinkles. These cute and spooky little Squishmallows are the perfect party favor for a Halloween bash, or for any autumnal gathering you might have planned.
